At this time of year, many people want to change their lives, for example by living more healthily, doing more sport or even looking for new career opportunities. However, these goals are often difficult to achieve, and many people fall into the trap of forgetting them during the course of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Psychological research shows that people most often fail to keep their New Year's resolutions because they do not have specific, measurable goals. When setting goals, it is important to not only formulate general wishes, but also specific steps that we can take to achieve our goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if your goal is to eat healthier, don't just say, \"I'm going to eat more vegetables,\" but set a goal to \"eat at least one serving of vegetables for lunch every day.\" This will help you create a specific plan that is easier to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve your goals, create a system that helps you remember your daily tasks. You can use a diary, mobile apps, or simply write notes on the fridge so you never forget what you want to achieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Positive reinforcement is also important. Celebrate your small successes, because they motivate you to achieve your goals. For example, if you manage to eat healthily for a week, reward yourself with a special experience, such as a wellness weekend or buying a book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people want to change. What better time to embark on a new journey than the new year? But have you ever made New Year's resolutions in the past and failed to change your behavior, thus failing to avoid losses?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also important to find a supportive community among people. Join people with similar goals who motivate and help you when you feel uncertain. Community support is extremely important because it is easier to stick to our goals when we know that others are striving for similar things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analyzing past experiences can also help with change. Think about why you didn't keep your old resolutions. What obstacles stood in your way? Try to identify these obstacles and develop new strategies to deal with them. For example, if compulsive shopping was the problem, look for alternative forms of entertainment that don't require money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mindfulness and meditation can also be effective methods for managing stress, helping you to avoid old coping mechanisms. This is frustrating and disappointing because no matter how determined you were on January 1, you end up falling short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why is this happening?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the behaviors you are trying to change are related to unresolved grief. You have to let go of the old before you can let in the new!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What do you mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common New Year's resolutions are what we call substitute actions or short-term energy-reducing behaviors. These are activities that provide a short-term distraction from negative or painful feelings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you feel that you are struggling with more serious problems, it may be worth seeking professional help. Psychologists and counselors can help you better understand the reasons behind your behavior and find more effective solutions to your problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When someone makes a New Year's resolution to lose weight or eat healthier, the substitute action they use is food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When someone makes a New Year's resolution to quit drinking, they consume alcohol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When someone makes a New Year's resolution to spend less, save more, or stick to a budget, the substitute behavior they use is spending money or shopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other popular New Year's resolutions include giving up gambling, smoking, drugs, video games, spending too much time on social media, and the like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last but not least, remember that change takes time. Be patient with yourself and don't give up if you don't achieve your goals right away. Small steps are much more important than big leaps, and each step brings you closer to your ultimate goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Year's resolutions are therefore not just promises, but opportunities for growth. If we approach them consciously and apply the right strategies, we can truly achieve the changes we want to make in our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem arises when we use them to avoid painful feelings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, let's say you feel sad, so you have a drink to \"take the edge off.\" Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that you don't so much want the drink as you want the sad feelings to go away?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how do I let go of what's holding me back?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step is to take an honest look at what you are trying to avoid. When did you start using your substitute activity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What coping mechanisms do you use, and when did you start using them? If you assess yourself honestly, you will see that it was triggered by a loss: a bad breakup, the death of a pet, moving away, losing your job, someone dying, feeling overwhelmingly sad but not knowing why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You see, substitute activities do work, but only temporarily.
